Robert Baird is a Scottish composer based in London. He is an advocate for player interpretation and choice in his work, and working with players to explore this notationally and conceptually. He is also a staunch supporter and writer of contemporary music for amateurs. Robert writes regularly for the English and Gàidhlig language, working with contemporary poets such as Eve Findlay, Maggie Lawson and Elizabeth Chadwick Pywell. His works have been premiered all over the UK.
Robert has collaborated with many up-and-coming artists such as Sunny Anderson, Alexander Boyd-Bench, Catherine Cotter, Thomas Luke, Annie NicDhòmhnaill, Binny Supin-Yang and Cherry Wang. He also works with the RCM New Ensemble, the Azure Trio, Kensington Chamber Choir, the RCM Wind Ensemble, the Baobab Quartet, the RCM String Orchestra and Innova Orchestra.
Upcoming projects include Hearth and Home for Orchestra, Spate for Saxophone Quartet, and Verticil for solo tuba. He is a pianist, cellist and is currently attempting to become a accordionist. As a music educator, he regularly works with schools and council music hubs, as well as individually. He is a Royal College of Music scholar, where he studies under Alison Kay and Errollyn Wallen.
