Robert Baird is a Scottish Composer based in London. His work looks at player interpretation and choice, space (in many forms!), the integration of Scottish Traditional Music, and music that is both fun to play and to hear.
Robert has collaborated with many up-and-coming artists such as Sunny Anderson, Alexander Boyd-Bench, Catherine Cotter, Thomas Luke, Annie NicDhòmhnaill, Markus Sadler, Mélia Simonot, Binny Supin-Yang and Cherry Wang. He works with the RCM New Ensemble, the Azure Trio, Kensington Chamber Choir, the RCM Wind Ensemble and the RCM String Orchestra, and has been commissioned by the Risoluto Quartet, Innova Orchestra and Ensemble R6. His works have been performed across the UK and beyond, including at Leeds Song Festival and SoundFestival. He has participated in masterclasses and workshops with the likes of Sir James MacMillan, Mark Anthony Turnage, and James Weeks. Robert writes regularly for the English and Gàidhlig language, working with contemporary poets such as Eve Findlay, Maggie Lawson and Elizabeth Chadwick Pywell.
Upcoming projects include Shouts and Spells for Accordion, Summer Sun for Spatialised Choir, and a mini-opera about Mary Queen of Scots. He is a pianist, cellist and is currently attempting to become a accordionist. As a music educator, he regularly works with schools and council music hubs, as well as individually. He is a Royal College of Music scholar, where he studies under Alison Kay and Errollyn Wallen.
